I am blogging these news items because I have found in the past that many news items are only available online for a few days. By posting them here in country-specific blogs I hope to build a database of news items that may be useful to anyone interested in the problems of street children and how they are perceived in the media. I am also including links to blogs that are about street children since these often contain valuable information and insight.<br /><b>If the Curse Fits....</b><br /><br />There is something wrong with the way we are approaching the problems of street children.<br />Look at the numbers. <br />150 million street children world-wide. <br />No-one suggests that this number is decreasing.<br />As a species we generally hold that children deserve the best we have to offer. <br />Our love, our protection and our care.<br />Yet millions of children lead lives of hopelessness, danger and despair.<br />Neglected and abused by the adults around them.<br />Ignored by adults who could remedy their situation if they cared.<br />We are living in a myth.<br />The myth is that we care for children.<br />The truth is that we care only for ourselves.<br /><br />Examine your own life. <br />Bring forward your excuses for not doing anything about the desperate situation of these children.<br />Dig around and you'll see that you have other priorities.<br />And when you've taken care of those priorities there's not much left over.<br />Maybe there's not even enough to meet your own long list of necessities.<br />So you feel sympathetic.<br />But not really able to do anything.<br />You've just bought into the myth.<br />You care, but not enough to make any self-sacrifices.<br />Your caring is just an emotional indulgence to let you feel good about yourself.<br />You keep your heart and your wallet in different pockets.<br />You're normal.<br /><br />Well Normal, here's my curse on you:<br />May you one day be friendless, homeless, cold and hungry.<br />May your despair be deeper than hell itself.<br />And may you writhe there for all eternity.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7046374691936759254-7419860209099657293?l=streetkidnews.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>adminnoreply@blogger.com0
